A Scene Of True Love, With Swirling

Scene opens on lakehouse kitchen. Nance is spreading pesto on flatbreads. Rick is opening a bottle of red wine. He pulls the cork and pours each of them a small amount to taste. Nance furiously swirls her glass on the counter before lifting it to her nose; inhales deeply. Rick takes a sniff of his and drinks.

Nance:  (slightly annoyed) You never swirl. I don't understand.

Rick:  (mildly; he's heard this before)  I'm not a fan of the swirling. And sometimes, yes, I do swirl. But I know this wine. I know it's fantastic. I don't need to swirl.

Nance:  I know this wine, too, but it is possible to get a bad bottle. It could be from the end of the run. The cork could fail. And I like to fully appreciate the first taste.

Rick:  I know you do. And you should. I just don't do all that.

Nance: (sighs deeply) Well, will you promise me something? If I get too old or frail or decrepit, will you always swirl my wine for me?

Rick:  Of course I will. I promise.

Nance:  And will you always pour it in the correct glass, too, even if I'm too senile to care?

Rick:  Yes. I'll try.

Nance:  And if I have to use a straw, will you make sure it's made of glass so it doesn't affect the taste and quality of the wine?

Rick:  You know I will. Of course.

Nance: (hugging him) Oh, thank you. You're the best.

End scene.

  1. I really love the idea of growing old with my husband. It's romantic, right?!

    1. NGS--For the most part, yes. We've been growing old together for over 40 years. It's very comforting to have that steadfast partnership.

  2. LOL I confess I do not swirl...I open, pour and consume. It's fortunate that I even use a glass! Hahaha

    1. Vera--You sound like my husband. He often claims that he's going to just guzzle it from the bottle, too. He can do that with his chardonnay if he wants. I don't drink that anymore. LOL

  3. AAArgh. Third try. I do not have the right glass or the straw. Bring your own when you come! And, before you venture into the wilds of Niagara again, here is a link for you. Funny once. Up Here, in Canada

Didn't work. Google it, eh. Worth it.

    1. Mary--Confession time: we're here right now. We zipped over the border at the last minute to do an emergency restock. It's a very short stay. I'll look up the song and check back. Wish you were here to greet us!

    2. Oh, so do I. I would even swirl. We did a wine tasting tour there once, a group of my very old friends and I. We behaved quite badly after the third stop. What do you mean, spit it back?

  6. I always knew he was a keeper! I'll confess that I don't swirl. Even when I went wine tasting in August, I only swirled to avoid judgement from the wine snobs.

Yes, he is definitely a keeper.

    1. Suzanne--Swirling for the Win! Honestly, I don't understand why anyone wouldn't. The wine really comes into its own after it's been swirled a bit.

  8. This is hilarious. I'd have a similar conversation with Coach, but it would revolve around ice cream or cake or something. I'd be reminding him that if they cured celiac but I was too old - would he be sure to mash up my real-deal cake and feed it to me? I'd be fine with a plastic fork even. ;)

You sure know your wine. Corks fail? Last run? Bad wine? I didn't know that was a thing. Not a swirling type over here.

    1. Ernie--Yes! Exact that Gluten Promise from him right now! Tell him you want garlic bread, everything bagels, cakes, batter-dipped fried things, and churros--even if he has to put them in the blender and pour them into a sippy cup! You deserve it.

  12. Oh, I love this story!! Luis and I have had similar conversations in recent years where we think about what it might be like as we edge towards old age. Really, we're pretty much there now. Not decrepit and frail yet, thankfully, but... a lot of stuff just isn't as easy as it used to be. Short-term memory loss really sucks, too. I hate getting to the kitchen and forgetting WTH I went there to do. I am so ready for my retirement next spring! The paperwork is a jungle, but I am starting to get a handle on it. I have no idea what the heck I will be doing a year from now, but I am ready to drop the red pen and get back into more cooking again for starters. And maybe swirling my wine if I can afford the good stuff. :-)

    1. Ortizzle--I am overjoyed that you have a Retirement Date! HOORAY!

I know what you mean about experiencing signs of aging. Rick and I were talking about it in the car on the way home from Canada this morning. Not in a scary and fearful way, but just thinking out loud about stuff. Like driving--how long might we both still be doing that, etc.

But hey, you can (and should) swirl even the cheap stuff. Trust me--it's good for the wine. XO

  13. Are you supposed to swirl white wine? I mostly drink white and I'm guilty of NOT Swirling.
I love how you two profess your enduring love to one another, over glasses of wine. ❤️

    1. BB Suz--Yes. You want to let the wine breathe and open up, even whites. I like crisper, more acidic whites, and I like them quite cool, but I still swirl to allow their bouquet come up. It also lets more of the wine come into contact with the air and fully develop its taste--sort of come more into its full potential.

Wine is our first shared interest. We love sharing wine.
