I'm Finally Thawed Out, So Let's Catch Up

Oh, hello there.

Thanks for waiting. It would seem I was semi-hibernating, waiting for the March Thaw. It has arrived, and gloriously so, here in NEO. We even hit 70 degrees and full-on sunshine one day. Every single mound of snow has melted, and on my now-daily-again walks, I have been greeted by eager crocuses. The red buds of the silver maples are swollen, and in some cases, have already burst into yellow fringe. In a single day, my daffodils and tulips suddenly emerged from the ground a full inch. March is a fickle lady, however; we may yet have more snow. My snow shovels will stay out of the garage and at my back door until April, lest I tempt the Fates.

So! Here's a little hodgepodge of what you missed in my world since I last checked in here.

1.  Walks:  It feels so liberating and rejuvenating to be back out on my daily walks. I was starting to get quite edgy and claustrophobic. After my two falls, I wanted to be absolutely sure that there was no ice to create a hazard. I will admit that the presence of some lingering Christmas decorations is irritating (Come on! It's March!), but I take deep breaths and make allowances due to the pandemic. After all, some people may need them for that last bit of--no! Screw that. Take them down.

2.  I Have A Graphic For That:

by Mike Luckovich

Let me just say that watching President Biden's speech last night reaffirmed for me the admiration  (and love) I have had for him lo, these many, many years. Could you feel the empathy? the sincerity? the authenticity? Did you feel--finally--that perhaps your government could possibly do the Right Thing by you and your family? As soon as the speech was over and we watched him walk away from the podium, Rick said, "Say it. Say it, Nance."  And I did. I said, "I love Joe Biden." Rick smiled and raised his wineglass. I am so grateful he is the President, and I cannot thank Georgia enough.

My vaccine story is one of great fortune. Like so many Americans I jumped online and registered with several providers. Ohio's is a tiered system by age and special considerations, such as chronic illness and certain professions. I was in the third tier, which opened up on March 4. On that day, my brother Bob called me and told me he happened to be at a Sam's Club close by; they had 20 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccination, and he had signed Rick and me up, along with himself and his girlfriend and two of his friends. Our appointments were three days later, that Sunday morning. I couldn't believe our luck! The pharmacy called the next day to confirm and get information, and we got our vaccines Sunday morning without incident. To say I'm grateful is an understatement.

3. The Un-Dinner:  Rick and I have embraced what we call The Snack Board for weekend dinners. Neither of us has been very good about food lately, feeling bored and not having much of a taste for anything. On the weekend we like to keep things casual and simple, so we've defaulted to assembling trays of fruit, veg, cheese, crackers, leftover tenderloin slices, braunschweiger (aka goose liver), olives, or anything we find hanging about in the fridge. Sometimes I make some dip, like spinach dip, or sometimes I warm a little brie with fig jam. We grab some wine, and that is dinner. Other times, I toss together some sauteed onions, black beans, and refried beans, then pour some enchilada sauce over it. I top it with some shredded sharp cheese, then put it under the broiler for a bit. We dig into that with tortilla chips, and that's dinner.  Sometimes, after I've planned, prepped, and cooked a meal, the last thing I feel like doing is eating it. This feels more like grazing to me.

What's been happening with you? Are you vaxxed yet? Are your Christmas decorations down? Do you love President Biden's compassion and policy? Do you cook on the weekends? More importantly, did you miss me? Give me the real deal in Comments.

  1. Yes, I did miss you. You got me used to reading you everyday with the daily post thing you did one month and now it is like withdrawal to keep waiting for new texts! But I understand! I finally learned to subscribe so I don't have to check your post each day...
I have had one dose of Moderna (I happened to be at my Walgreens for something else and discovered they had an extra dose to offer me!) So that felt great!
I fell 2 weeks ago and bashed my nose and skinned my knees but THANK GOODNESS nothing broken! Altho, this week I tried to get back out for my daily walk and it looks like a little airbag blew up under the skin on top of my kneecap - bursitis! It does not hurt but it appeared suddenly so no walking and lots of elevating. AND I am so pleased with Joe Biden!

    1. Ellen--I'm sorry that I'm not better about writing here. I need to be. I am undisciplined and need inspiration. If you have any ideas for me to write about here, please send them! I'd be happy to have something to write about every day again. I promise I'll try to step it up FOR YOU. You can be my inspiration.

Congratulations on your Serendipitous Vax! You're halfway there.

What awful news about your fall and and resulting bursitis. It's an awful shock to fall like that, isn't it? So glad you didn't break bones or teeth, but now you're immobilized by the bursitis. Damn! Sounds like reading and interwebs time. And television and streaming, if you have a subscription. Take care of yourself so that you can get back out there.

      (We love Joe!)

  2. No Christmas decorations to take down since it was just us here and I was so worn out from the fall semester that I bought a poinsettia and called it a day.

Luis and I are fully vaxxed! We got our 2nd dose of Moderna on Feb. 25th. It felt so liberating! (And still does, of course.) Waiting for the rest of our family members to get the jab so we can have a major hug-fest further down the line!

I have always loved Joe Biden. So human, so compassionate… and so exactly what this country needs right now— he’s been there and done that in every realm of government. This was truly His Moment in Time. And yes, yes, yes to not being able to thank Georgia enough. We truly owe control of the Senate to Stacey Abrams for her tireless, relentless efforts to get the vote out. We can absolutely replace one of those horrid confederate statues with one of her.

The Un-dinner: We do a bit of the same. Also eat and sleep at weird times of day. COVID syndrome + age. I am dying to hear what’s in your enchilada sauce. I only make it when I actually make enchiladas en salsa verde or chilaquiles. I am guessing it’s tomatillos + whatever.

YES. I missed you. Of course! Lovely to get another dose of Nance today. Especially since I am celebrating the start of Spring Break. No vacay, and some major admin stuff that the uni piled on us at the last minute, but… at least a breather from the daily grind of online classes. XXOO

Stacey Abrams is an incredible Force. She is the republicans' worst nightmare. They have no answer for the likes of her.

Dearest Friend, I am laughing and laughing. My enchilada sauce is whatever Old El Paso or Ortega puts in their can. It is red. It is medium. It is usually about $1.59. Bless your heart. I love you so, so much.

Enjoy your Spring Break and do take a break. You honestly deserve it. XXOO

  3. Joe Biden is the best! It feels so amazing to see someone actually act presidential! To not hear all the lies or self promotion, just empathy, truth and sincerity. He is the right man for the job and just like you I have always admired him. Such amazing news about the vaccine, I got my first dose this week and I am just thrilled. I go back in three weeks and that is just fine with me. Have a lovely weekend, enjoy your walks.

    1. Meredith--Agree, agree, agree! It's incredibly calming to be able to listen to the President and not feel embarrassed, angered, or outraged.

Congratulations on your vax! I'm sure it's a big relief since your job involves going into private homes of all kinds of people, working in close contact. I'm happy and relieved for you.

  4. I'll start with my usual - Yay, a Nance post! I am so glad it's finally warming up a bit there and happy that you can get out for your walks, and even see signs of spring. President Biden is the best, I love him so much. He is everything our country needs right now, he makes my heart so happy. I'm also very happy to hear you were able to get your vaccine. I hope my hubs and I can squeeze in there somewhere soon, but you know how things roll here in Florida. Love your un-dinners, those are very typical meals for us here in the summertime, it just gets too hot to eat regular meals. Luckily we are still having nice weather at the moment - sweltering heat coming soon. last one, of course I missed you! Have a fantastic weekend. :)

    1. Martha--Oh, thank you! I'm glad it's warming up here, too. This winter was a lot worse than last year's, which was incredibly mild and spoiled us all.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you both that your vaccine is coming soon. It's terrible what I'm reading about how DeSantis prioritized vaccines for the rich communities.

Enjoy your temperate weather while you have it. That's exactly what we did here, spending time outdoors, grilling, walking, etc. Today, we're back in the low 40s, but our sunshine remains. I'll take it!

  5. What's been happening with you? Not much.

Are you vaxxed yet? Half-vaxxed, which is better than half-assed. Finish up this Tuesday. YAY!

Are your Christmas decorations down? They've been down. We only do outside lights and they come down the first nice day after Dec. 28.

Do you love President Biden's compassion and policy? Mixed reaction ---- he's a damn sight better than what we had, but I think he tends to be overwordy. I do, however, believe that he is genuinely a nice man.

Do you cook on the weekends? I do.

More importantly, did you miss me? ABSOLUTELY --- yes, yes, and YES! I love reading your posts. They make me laugh, they make me think, sometimes they make me angry ---- but I truly love it all. Why don't you stick around for awhile. I think you should. ;-)

    1. Dee--Hooray for The Vax! You'll be topped off by Tuesday.

I'm so happy that you are not a Late Decoration Person. I just know we'd get along wonderfully. Someday--soon!--we need to meet in person.

Thank you for such kind and flattering words about my work here. I am an undisciplined writer, and I confess that I need inspiration. I promise to try and write more often. I'll work on it.

  6. Welcome back. It does feel good to get the vaccine, doesn't it. I get my second one next week. Can hardly wait.

I, too, am really grateful that Joe was elected. He's the right person at the right time...knows his way around Washington and the White House and is restoring dignity and character back where it belongs.

    1. Jean--Thank you. And yes, I felt a sense of joyful relief once I got my vax. Like I could put a big checkmark--DONE--next to a big item on a To Do List. It gave me a renewed sense of Hope, like I was taking a step, my own part, towards Normalcy.

I agree, and have said this, that President Biden is much like President Lincoln, a man for the moment. He is the right person to reset not only the Presidency, but the country and its rightful standing in the world. Not only that, but lead us forward out of this mess and beyond.

  7. What's been happening with you? Juggling work, grad school, and travel (which taking as many precautions as I can, as you know). It has kept me quite busy, and I've definitely had many days where I spent an inordinate amount of time on Netflix. One of the shows on Netflix I liked is this show called Terrace House, which is basically a Japanese version of the Real World, except everything moves at a glacial pace. And I just discovered that the original season, which isn't on Netflix, can be found online. So I've been working my way through that.

Are you vaxxed yet? No. This will likely require a long and expensive flight (on top of the appointment scheduling difficulties that everyone is having). I'm planning on trying to get it in June when it'll theoretically be easier to get an appointment. Though I did just learn that Serbia is willing to vaccinate nonresidents, and you can specify which vaccine brands you're interested in, so that might be a possibility in a couple of months. Only time will tell.

Are your Christmas decorations down? The last Christmas decorations I had were when I was in Japan in 2019. I bought a little Christmas tree and some ornaments at Daiso for $2. I ended up gifting them to a friend when I left, and he has since moved back to Colombia. So, I don't know what happened to them.

Do you love President Biden's compassion and policy? Yes. Of course. It's as though we've awoken after a four-year-long nightmare.

Do you cook on the weekends? I haven't been cooking much at all while I've been on the road, but I've been cooking a bit more than usual this month. I made some cheeseburgers the other day, since the local burger places here don't really look like they might be that great. And last night I made roasted tomato soup, which I'll have with grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner. There have been other things I've wanted to cook, but it's hard when I don't have all of my kitchen gadgets, and when it's harder to find certain ingredients here.

More importantly, did you miss me? Obviously! I make my way to your blog every few days to see if there's an update, so it's always a delight when I see a new post!

    1. Mikey--It's lovely to hear from you and lovely to be missed.

If you can get vaxxed on your journey, that would be awesome. And so convenient. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Rick and I are almost finished with "Versailles" on Netflix, and I can highly recommend it. Three seasons, and each season gets better and more exciting as it develops. No American stars are in it, so there's no distraction, if you know what I mean.

I commend you for doing any cooking with all you have to do as you travel. But I know that once in a while, it's nice to stay in and feed yourself, especially a comfort food like grilled cheese and tomato soup.

  8. Of course you've been missed! That goes without saying. Yes, Biden will be good for the country and Harris too. As for weekend cooking, I do most of it sat. & Sun. so all week long, for 5 days, we have leftovers & NO cooking.

My favorite part today? The last two lines of #1!!!

    1. Anni--Thank you. Weekend cooking sounds like a great solution for you, but I don't think it would solve my problem. I imagine myself looking at all that cooked food and saying, "I don't feel like having ANY of that." Sigh.

Re: #1--I'm pretty brutal when it comes to outdoor Xmas decor being left up way late. Especially just a wreath on the door. HOW HARD IS IT!?

  9. I'm so happy that your weather is becoming more 'friendly' for you. Walking in the sunshine is good for our bodies and soul.
Wow, you received the much heralded Johnson & Johnson vaccine. No side effects? If you were concerned about anything at all, it's nice now to not worry about it.
I really like your grazing type of meal planning/prepping for the weekends. We try to do dinner 'out' on Friday nights and then generally I'll cook either Saturday or Sunday and then have leftovers, or 'fend for yourself' type meals.
    I'm happy you are back!

    1. BB Suz--No side effects except for a sore arm for a day. I definitely felt the vaccine in there, both going in and for about ten minutes afterward. But I had no fatigue, fever, aches, or anything, and I was obviously glad about that.

I cook pretty much every weeknight and always have. I finally got it down to where I don't cook for four anymore, and leftovers aren't common. If we do have any, Sam (my son) comes for lunch and can take care of them then.

I'm happy that you're happy I'm back! Thank you.

  10. I thoroughly understand the gaps in posting. Who better. And no, I am not vaccinated although JG has a date at the end of the month. Ontario scheduling is left to the individual Health Units and ours has 75 to 80, my cohort, eligible about mid April. Since that is also when I expect the snow to finally vanish, I may borrow your post then. But yes, Biden is a fine change. As to the cooking thing, our next two meals are ones I have already cooked and plan to reheat. Supper is the highlight of JG's day and so I keep cooking along.
It is maple syrup time though. The beginning of spring, even with a foot,of stubborn white stuff still, with us.

    1. Mary--You've been outposting me lately. That's the main reason I decided I'd better step it up! (Just kidding.)

We here in NEO have been the recipients of the Canadians' gift of polar wind and temperatures often enough, so please keep all of that to yourselves until, perhaps, August. Then it would be most kind of you to send it right down.

Ohio produces a fine lot of maple syrup as well, but I think it's a bit early. Usually the local news channels go off and do a few stories about it, and they haven't done so yet. I'm thinking a week or so?

  11. I return to confess that I am guilty ... our Christmas wreath is still hanging by the front door. It is not down because it is made of real cedar branches wired in place and when I take,it down, I will have to take it apart. I want a day that is warm to do this or I will rip my fingers on the wires (voice of experience here). If I take it off the wall, I will forget about it and find the desiccated corpse stowed somewhere next fall. Itmis a lovely wreath that a friend of my daughter's kid made for a fundraiser and quite unobtrusive, really. Lots of cedar, one small bow and two glass balls.
A warm enough day will arrive soon. Please do not unfriend me. Please ......

    1. Mary--I will not unfriend you, but I must be honest and say that I highly disapprove. Snip off the bow if it is Christmassy (even just plain red) and remove the glass balls. Goodness. Or wear leather gloves to haul that sucker down.

  12. I missed you! So happy to pop in today and find you here.

I love your snacky meals, and wish we lived closer so I could come share one with you, which I COULD DO, because I am fully vaccinated, and so are you! Sadly, Ted and Maya are not yet, so it would be just me and perhaps Mulder to catch any crumbs we might drop. I got vaccinated due to volunteering with the elderly, we are not in any eligible group quite yet. But we’re feeling hopeful now that more vaccine is coming in all of the time.

We took our Christmas decorations down on January 1st or 2nd, as is our tradition. I love having it up, but generally I cannot wait to be rid of it.

I cook during the week, and Ted cooks on weekends. Maya doesn’t like cooking, so pretty much avoids it as much as she can. Ted and I both enjoy cooking. The most difficult part for both of us is figuring out what to cook, especially as we have a lot of conflicting dietary restrictions around here, some by choice, some due to aging and bodies with changing needs. Sigh.

I am so thankful to have Biden in office. SO THANKFUL.

    2. J--Thank you. It means a lot to know that I was missed. I will try to do better and show up here more often.

You are always welcome to come for a visit, especially during lake season. We can take a lazy boat ride, enjoy some wine, and have our Un-Dinner together. If you'd like to fish, you can toss a line in as well. Or pretend to fish.

I used to enjoy cooking a great deal, but I lost that joy several years ago when I started feeling a lot less like eating. Sometimes it feels like a great deal of bother to figure it all out when I don't know what it is that I want. I certainly understand how your situation, with vegetarian/vegan, aging, and health concerns driving the bus. I have to be aware of Rick's high blood pressure and making sure I get enough protein and enough salt, thanks to my migraine meds. It can take the joy right out of food at times.

I pass by a fence covered with all different colours of clematis on my daily walk, and when they are in bloom, it's glorious. We are lucky because the neighbors to the west have clematis that flop over the fence and bloom on our side. Bonus flowers!

  13. Yay! A Nance post! I feel VERY RELIEVED that we took our Christmas decorations down around MLK's birthday (might have been the week after?). I kept threatening to leave them up until the time changed, but I didn't have time to mess with them today so it's good that was already done.

I am very relieved & happy that Biden is president now. Of course, there are things I will wish that he does differently (he's no Bernie Sanders - ha!), but knowing that he is a GOOD PERSON is just such breath of fresh air.

As you know, I'm half-vaxxed - my second Pfizer shot is on March 25th. Can't wait!

    1. kathy b--I always smile and feel grateful. As so many--and I--have said, he IS the Man For This Moment. One article I read said that he is a pastoral president, that he was elected primarily because people wanted a president to counter the past four years of narcissism and cruelty. He is already helping the nation to not only grieve the losses of the many victims of this pandemic and racial strife, but to heal from them. I think the speech he gave exemplified that. So did his inaugural address.

I also see that past Presidents who care about lives and not political influence made those ads and got their vaccinations (and wear masks consistently) in public. Former guy got his vax in secret before he left his former job/office and didn't say a word about it. Worthless and dangerous still.

Ohio just opened up their vaccinations to everyone 16 and older as of March 29. I think this makes a great deal of sense if what we're going for is herd immunity now. Why put up barriers to the vaccine if there is enough of it and people want it? I just read that over 40% of republican men are saying they don't plan to vaccinate. Talk about COVIDIOTS.

  19. I'll join the chorus of all those who are thrilled to see a new post from you, Nance! That should never come as a surprise to you, my friend!

Un-dinners. Because there are three of us here at the moment, our only un-dinners are clean-out-the-fridge nights but once I am solo again, un-dinners will return without a doubt.

Decorations. My wreath was a winter wreath vs a Christmas wreath so it was up until a few weeks ago. I also purposely left my candles in the windows through the end of February. They sure make the dark and cold evenings much more bearable. And now we have more daylight in the evenings and that lifts me up more than I can possibly say.

Walks. What a relief to get back to moving and see the sights in your neighborhood that bring you so much joy, right? Our snowy/icy period was much shorter than yours but I and the dogs were so happy when we could get back to walking on our street. We don't go that far these days (but will again soon) but we all so need our walks!

Vaccine. I'm thrilled for you guys! Bo and Justine are getting their first shots tomorrow and I get my last one two weeks from tomorrow. Soon my immediate family will be a fully vaccinated and that feels absolutely huge! I can't wait to hug and visit with my mom and other vaccinated friends. I don't plan on going crazy but I'm definitely looking forward to an "expanded" life.

Biden. Oh my goodness, what an amazing job he and his administration are doing! I am so grateful to have him in office. His kindness and caring shine through in every word and every action. It's clear that "his whole soul" is in his presidency, just as he promised at his inauguration. I can't imagine anyone else being able to do the job he's doing.

Feeling happy and hopeful these days and I can't stop being thankful for that fact! Thanks for highlighting all the good stuff!

    1. Shirley--Thank you. I love my Readers and Commenters.

Candles in the windows are not so much a Cmas thing, at least around here. They got to be a homey thing years and years ago. Lots of houses always have an electric or battery operated candle or two in the window or windows every night.

My neighborhood has come alive with the nicer weather, as I'm sure yours has. Lots more people out walking dogs or just walking, and there are now people biking and jogging. It makes for more maneuvering, which is bittersweet, but the walking is The Thing for me. And you!

Now that Ohio is opening up vaccine for everyone by the end of the month, things look so hopeful. My sons are looking forward to getting their appointments, too. I know your housemates are itching to get back to their Real Lives; perhaps not too much longer.

President Biden is making Good Things happen and showing terrific leadership. He's also showing that a President puts the people first and works for the People, not the other way around. What a much-needed return to normalcy and good government.

So good to see you here again. XO

  20. Got vaxxed early on...an hour wait on the phone to schedule the appointment was nothing in my book. First time ever that I've been thrilled to be old...made the first tier cut in KY. Weather here is beautiful when it's not raining. March apparently thinks it's April, which probably means May's flowers will explode soon, leaving May to turn dastardly hot, buggy, and humid. An early summer is not my idea of good weather. And YES! The country is heading in a direction with which I'm happy...although I sure wish he could ban those assault rifles. What is wrong with people? Since when do hunters want to completely blow the heads off their trophy deer? THIS IS NOT ABOUT gun ownership...it's about crazies.

    1. steph--Our spring is early as well after a miserable February. But I'm not easily fooled: my snow shovels are still out on the patio and my porch and patio furniture is still in the basement. Last year, after a very meek and mild winter, we had snow in May.

I'll never understand this country's attraction to gun ownership. If you hunt, fine--have a hunting rifle. If you like to target shoot, borrow the range's guns. I just don't understand the allure.
