Oh, the Agony

On yesterday's news there was a segment urging Clevelanders to patronize locally owned restaurants rather than chain franchise establishments. The camera zoomed in on one outdoor chalkboard menu. It read:

Independants Day Special's !

You do realize that I can never, ever, in good conscience, eat there. Ever.

This is as painful as the CNN segment on Americans' knowledge of geography. The journalist was on the streets of New York City challenging people to locate NY state on the map, and a ridiculous number of people could not do it!

I will never forget that at a friend's apartment, we parked in a spot in which there's "no parking on Thursday's." Who's Thursday, and on what of his/hers are we not allowed to park?

j--Some things are simply not to be borne!

v-grrrl--Do other countries delight in exposing their citizentry's ignorance this way? As a public school teacher, I get tired of the implicit blame here.

anon (2)--Ah, the ubiquitous and much-abused apostrophe. Surely no other punctuation mark has suffered so much over-employment. Running a close second MIGHT be the exclamation point by middle-school girls in private correspondence.
