In Which I Reflect Upon Small Moments Of Pure Joy

Last week I was driving to pick up my mother (previously referred to here on the blog as St. Patsy) for one of her doctor's appointments. My mother has a team of doctors who serve as her Wellness Superheroes. At 90 she is in remarkable physical health, despite her inordinate fondness for ice cream.

On this particular day I was stopped at the traffic light and, being first in my lane at the intersection, noticed movement in the first car headed the opposite direction across the road. A great deal of movement, actually, and so I took a moment to get a better look.

The driver of the car was its sole occupant. He was giving himself completely to Car Dancing: his hands hit the wheel in rhythm; his body bounced up and down; his head nodded and shook back and forth. He was grinning as if he were the happiest guy in the world. I started smiling, too, just looking at him.

For a moment I reached for my phone. "I should video this," I thought, "and put it on the blog." Then I put my hand back on the steering wheel.

I wanted to let this simple moment of Pure Joy be just that, Simple. Not everything needs to be recorded, photographed, captured, or put on display for everyone else to see. Sometimes, just Living In That Moment is the very best thing you can do, like the Happy Car Dancing Man. I felt like I'd be ruining the moment for both of us.

I drove by and felt very lucky to have seen him. He really brightened my day.

Today I drove St. Patsy to another doctor's appointment. I saw a hawk dive for its prey and a dog head sticking out of a passing pickup truck. My mother and I snarked back at my GPS, just for the hell of it. I thought again of the Car Dancing Guy, and how happy he was. It made me smile all over again.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Maybe it's because of, not despite.

    1. kayT--Hello, and welcome to the Dept.!

I'm sure she would heartily agree with you. Ice cream, along with her secret stash of any sweets she has bought at the drugstore, pie, and strawberry jam would indeed be jolly things to have as a lifeline. Oh, and hotdogs. She does love a good hotdog.

  3. Agreed. Not everything needs to be photographed or videoed. It's ok to just live your life in the moment. Happy, even.

    1. Ally Bean--I think a great deal gets lost when you try to live 'secondhand' through the camera's lens. Like the people who film concerts: YOU ARE THERE! ENJOY IT! A few photos once in a while are fine, but the constant itch to reach for a phone to document every single thing is getting crazy. Live In The Moment. Just have the memory.

    1. Dee--Sometimes I wonder if having a camera on phones is really such a great idea. I do like having mine, but it does take away from thinking and remembering. It eliminates Words in many cases.

I still see The Car Dancing Man in my mind's eye. He always makes me happy, too.

  5. It's a wonderful serendipitous moment when someone is so joyful that it rubs off on us. Makes me smile just reading about the dancing car guy.

    1. Jean--It really, really is. I wonder if it would happen more often were we more observant and more inclined to Joy. These days, I'm looking for Joy wherever I can find it.

    1. Vera--It really was. He was completely given over to his Joy.

St. Patsy is obsessed. One of her birthday gifts this year was a Quart-A-Month Delivery of ice cream by my sister Susan. Most flavours have to be Chocolate Intensive.

  7. I agree - not everything has to be recorded to be "real" or enjoyed. Car Dancing Guy is a man after my own heart. :-)

    1. Bridget--I'm a fan of car dancing myself. I certainly hope no one ever videoed me! Yikes.

There are so many platforms now within Social Media that plaster images and videos all over the Web. Too much of "Life" is on display, whether real or manufactured. What if everyone Just Lived Their Lives?

  8. I am a car singer and sometimes dancer! I always find joy when a favorite song comes on the radio! It is great that you can help your Mom. I miss the days when I did that for my Mom.

    1. Ellen D.--I rarely do either one, actually, but when I do, it's usually BIG.

Each of us sibs helps out with Mom in a different capacity; I took over her medicals as soon as I retired. I'm sorry for the loss of your Mom.

Your Mother is my hero. I'm so glad she is doing well.
I LOVE the car dancing guy; what a way to be, right?
It's awesome to just live in the moment, enjoy a happy guy dancing or a dog with his face to the wind.

    1. Suz--She's doing incredibly well physically. Unfortunately, she does have Alzheimer's disease, so that is frustrating.

Living in the moment and giving yourself over completely to a Car Dance really IS the way to be. I was glad to have witnessed it.

  13. I do sometimes take photos of funny stuff I see, but more to text to a friend I know would enjoy it (rather than making a statement on social media.) We do need to disconnect from our digital devices and stop to smell the roses as the saying goes. Which is probably an apt example of just 'living it without recording it except in our memories'--- taste, scent and touch don't upload too well to Instagram. So hooray for Living in the Moment, and thank you for that moment. We need more of that these days, especially since our social moments are a lot more limited. XXOO

    1. Ortizzle--I take photos of silly signs and ironic stuff to share here all the time. My sons send me that sort of thing via text routinely, and I appreciate it immensely.

There are those moments of Joy, however, that should be fleeting and immersive. In this day and age of everything being plastered all over the internet, we rarely do Live In The Moment. The Moment is always There. I'm always befuddled, for example, by the people who pay to go to a concert and then view it from their phones as they record it SO THAT THEY CAN WATCH IT AGAIN. Sigh. Just dumb.

Good to see you here. XXOO

    1. Meredith--Me, too. It's simply not possible to feel the way he felt all the time in our lives, but we should certainly give ourselves over to Joy whenever we are lucky enough to feel it.
