November: Good News, Bad News

The Good News is that there were no broken bones.

The Bad News is that there were two broken teeth, two sprained wrists, two deep elbow contusions, a bashed-in face, and two bruised knees. And a ton of soreness and impatience and oh, more self-admonishment than you could ever know.

Sigh. I fell again. Out on my walk, less than half a block from my home, simply keeping a brisk pace with my eyes only on my surroundings. But there were leaves and acorns hiding the uneven sidewalk joins, and down I went. Hard. So, so hard. I must have tried to stop myself by putting both arms out--big mistake--and then went right on over onto mostly the right side of my face.

Exactly one week before Rick's shoulder surgery.

My timing is, in a word, horrendous.

Poor Rick. This is his second surgery in less than a year, and the second one not covered by Workers' Compensation. He will be out for four months, and all of those with no income. Perfect time for me to incur not only medical bills but dental bills, too. I'm so angry at myself even though I know stuff just happens; I didn't have a single thing to do with how this all unfolded.

We're keeping things positive. We're a good team; we've gone through plenty of tough times before. I'm already feeling better physically. The dentist was able to cap my teeth the next day, which was a huge boost for my spirits and my Vanity. Sam is just down the street, and Jared will be chauffeuring us on Tuesday for Rick's surgery. Because, of course, a huge winter storm is dropping a bunch of snow the night before and on that day. And I don't feel okay driving quite yet, even in the best of conditions.

Any shovelling will have to wait. We won't be going anywhere--either of us--for a little while.

I would like to write more, but it is a bit of a struggle and it takes some time. I will be back after things settle down a bit. Please send your best thoughts to the Universe to see that they do.

  2. Oh, so sorry this has happened and unfortunatey I have no sage advice to give. That said, I have every confidence you will take what comes and muddle through it. Having the right partner in Rick will help a lot. I'm sending warm and healing vibes from WNC to NEO. Take care...both of you.

  4. Oh, geez, Nance!!! I sympathize so much with the 'wasn't expecting anything in my path' scenario. I have taken countless spills because I didn't see an uneven sidewalk, an evil little pothole when crossing a street at night, and of course, last January when I tripped on a bike lane marker and dislocated my shoulder. The timing with Rick's surgery... well, it never rains but it pours. And as you say, you've been through tough times before. That said, it is good to hear that you've got back-up from Sam & Jared! As others have said: Sending healing vibes your way and regrets that I'm not close enough to help. (I might not have been too much help, though, since Mr. O. just had 2 kidney operations, but at least we could have commiserated in person!) XXOO

  5. You are a trooper. Sending waves of sympathy to you both. Hope the surgery goes well and that you both heal up at lightning speed. And, yeah, we are expecting the same damn storm sometime Monday when I have an hour drive for physio. I note that it just took me three tries to spell lightning correctly. Good grief. At least your head is working, even if the rest of you is creaking. Hugs, <<< >>>, to store for when you need them.

  15. By the way, since I am sure with your wrist and everything else, you will not be popping around blogs for a bit, I don’t want you to miss my good news, that my sister finished her chemo/radiation, and had her follow up the other day, and is in FULL REMISSION! That’s just good news, no bad.

  16. Oh my GOODNESS! You two have been through the wringer this year! And OUCH. I'm going to do some extra watching of my footing because that kind of walking accident is just the sort of thing I would do.

  19. Just heard about this in the Worthiverse. I am so sorry to hear about your fall! Sending you wishes for a speedy recovery for you and Rick. Perhaps Mary can stop by with some muffins and some advice how to heal bruises more quickly, or how to avoid falling, or anything else, really.--lmjb1964
