In Which I--And Now You--Learn That It's Simply A Matter Of Perspective

Right now, Retirement just feels like Summer Vacation.  But we have Very Serious Discussions about it.  Like this one.

Scene opens on backyard deck.  Rick has just gotten home from work.  Nance greets him as he comes out of garage.

Me: What if you come home now and find me on the patio every night with a drink in my hand?

Rick: That would be fine. I’d love it.

Me: No! You don’t want me to drink alone!

Rick: I don’t care.

Me: But what if I get drunk? What if I just drink and drink and drink?

Rick: Don’t worry. I’ll catch up.

End scene.

  1. Right there with you! It's great not having to get up in the morning unless I absolutely feel like it.

  2. Haaaaaaa! Good one. Let him catch up with you. As long as one person is sober enough to make dinner.

  3. If you used to have stress dreams before the start of school, they might happen for a few years, they did in our household.

Fast forward six months, it is 12 degrees and there is two feet of old snow on the ground.

  5. So. Md. "It is 12 degrees and there is two feet of old snow on the ground" and Nance is visiting friends in Florida, hearing about it from Rick. HA!

  6. V-grrrl--Now that sounds nice! And I do have a friend in Florida who I could go and bother for a while...!

So.Md.--You're probably right. By December, the snow will likely be high and old. (Yikes. Let's hope those are two adjectives we also aren't using to describe moi!) At that point, I'll be sitting in front of the fire, encased in fleece, drinking Ontario Port.

Sillyak--Not usually stress dreams, but I could never sleep before the first day of school. Now I won't even be aware of when it is.

Ortizzle--Certainly one of us can find the bag of Lay's, and if further sustenance is needed, the Jif and Smucker's.

    aplo--Are you retiring, too? ;-)

  8. Shirley--...and no danger whatsoever of confusing the two! ;-)

  9. Sounds about right to me.

You should be able to drink all afternoon because you have back-up.

Just think of Rick as your designated reviver.....

  10. I pink puffy heart Rick right now. And in case he catches up before one of you has time to make dinner, make sure you have cheese, crackers, salami, and fruit laying around strategically. Nothing wrong with that for dinner. Yum.

  11. I'm late to the party... Congratulations on your retirement!! Although I'm quite sad to learn it's now impossible for Dev to have you as a teacher next year. Sigh.

However, I'm available for afternoon drinks on Wednesdays and Thursdays so that you don't have to drink alone, call me! :)

  12. Nina--I'm sorry about Devin, but thank you for the sentiment. I know our parent-teacher conferences would have been entertaining! Only available on Weds. and Thurs.? Sounds like I either have competition or you have a REAL JOB. Either way, I'll pencil you in and let you know.

J.@jj.--I told Rick of your pph status, and he grinned. As far as the appetizer dinner, we have pretty much perfected that as a Friday night supper year-round. The menu varies, but back when I was working(!!!), Fridays meant a late, easy, finger-food meal and a bottle (or 2) of wine or martinis for me and gin and tonics for Rick. Very relaxing after a work week.

Nancy--LOL! I love the idea of a Designated Reviver. Now, however, that the boys live farther away, they will be tougher to call in as reinforcements once Rick catches up.

  14. Melinda--Thank you! And welcome to the Dept. I plan on several Celebrations at various points along the way...Milestones, I guess you would call them. I'll keep you posted.

  15. I try to have the Big R discussion with Mr. Fairway, but I don't think he's listening. But if you do decide to ride off into the sunset, I'll join you, and we can drink together!
