Monday Meme: Love It/Hate It

    1. Ally Bean--I had to learn to keep my truth to myself SO MUCH for 30 years in the classroom. It was HARD.

Do I remember you saying over at your spot that you don't like chunky ice creams anymore? I have found that as well. (That knocks out a lot of Ben & Jerry!) I don't like topping on ice cream anymore either. We're Purists now.

I just put my (hardback) copy of Da Vinci Code in a box for donation. ;-)

  2. #1. I usually love all Christmas music. Sad muzac in grocery stores can bring me to tears. I hate the song, Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down. I swear if I"m shopping and it comes on, I'll leave or cry!
#2 Best worst traits: thoughtful to a fault, worst: worrier.
    #3 french toast
    #4 Hmmmmmm not sure
#5 I love my cats but I hate cleaning the boxes

    1. kathy b--I am conflicted about Christmas music! I get really bored with a lot of it, but newer versions or downright new Christmas music offends the strict traditionalist in me sometimes. It's silly. My grocery store is wildly eclectic and plays all kinds of muzak, even alternative rock and grunge. And all the stockers sing along. It's like shopping at an off-Broadway show.

It seems all my Commenters are prone to worry (along with Your Writer!), so we are in good company.

Back when we first started having a cat as a pet, I hated cleaning boxes too. I feel like litter has come a long way, and now I don't mind it. Seems easier.

  3. #1 I like most music, even country music but usually only listen to that in the summer. I guess I hate scream-o/emo music.

#2 Best trait, I think I’m pretty empathetic and accepting of others (except my family)
Worst trait, hands down is my ability to go to worst case scenario and 2nd runner up, my lack of a filter at times

#3 Wish I could think of a food I no longer love

    #4. Lincoln in the Bardo

#5 ditto on the cat; love her, hate the fur and litter box

    1. Rose--Sigh. It *is* hard to practice our best traits on our own family, isn't it? All that baggage clanks around our ankles, and we get trapped in it.

I am so torn about Lincoln in the Bardo. I know it's not really about Lincoln, per se, and I get pretty annoyed with really experimental fiction; thus, I've been avoiding this book. (Not too hard for me to do these days; I'm still not reading much. Sigh.) If it's beautifully written, however, I'm afraid I'm missing out.

    2. It took me a minute to get into Lincoln in the Bardo, but once I did I thought it was a hoot. It was also terribly poignant. But, yes, VERY strange.

  4. #1 I usually listen to country western if I listen to music at all. Prefer TV.
#2 Best traits: same as yours.
#3 I honestly can't think of a food I used to love but don't anymore.
    #4 Fifty Shadows of Gray
#5 I love desserts but hate their calories.

    1. Jean--I have to be In The Mood to choose to listen to music. I wonder why I haven't gotten on the Podcast bandwagon? Probably because I am too lazy to search through all the chaff to find one.

I never even had the desire to read Fifty Shades of Grey, but lots and lots of women my/our age made it a real force. I still cannot understand why. Article after article online posted excerpts of its horrid, vapid writing (and ridiculous plot points), and I was roundly dismayed. Oh well. As I've often said, this is also the country that ... never mind. We all know.

    2. Just to clarify. I never read the book either. I read enough about it that I knew I didn't want that theme to be marketed as romance and that's exactly what they did. No one should give their power away!

  5. 1. What song/kind of music always makes you feel good/irritated?
    Good singer/songwriters. All the rest.

    2. What are among your best/worst traits?
My best traits are empathy, tolerance, and a sense of humour. (Only probably not as developed as yours.)
My worst traits are laziness, passive aggression and an inability to decide whether there needs to be a double consonant or not.

    3. What food did you used to like but now you don't?
I like food. What really sucks is that the meds i have to take at present preclude wine drinking. SOB!!

    4. What book did everyone else love but you didn't?
Most of what the book club I belong to chooses.

    5. Fill in the blanks:
I love my daughters, but I hate how hard they work.
I love my country but I hate how feeble most of the party leaders are.
I love writing, but I hate worrying about the fact that there is very little in my brain to blog about.

    1. Mary--Every med I've ever been on has interfered with my wine enjoyment. I always ask my doctors as to how seriously I have to take those cautions. As to Blog Block, I understand. A couple years ago, I used the alphabet as my construct and found it helpful to use a letter a week to narrow down my choice for writing material. Maybe you would as well.

I'm so glad to see you here! We look forward to Real Spring together.

    2. We still have a hard layer of ice on the ground, but where the sun hits it, it is turning to mud. When mud is a welcome sign, perhaps I need to get out more. Hmm.

  6. Hmmm. If I were to do this meme next Monday, that would be two posts in one month. A long way from when I used to post daily, but oh well.

I'm with you on Never Let Me Go. Luckily, it was a library book, so I just returned it.

If you have books to donate, my friend Rosemary recently posted about an organization called Operation Paperback, which matches soldiers and military families with books they are interested in reading. You do pay postage, but you can send it book rate, even if they are overseas, so it's not too bad. I haven't tried it yet, but it does seem worthwhile to me.

    1. J@jj--All my books are hardbacks. Can you imagine the postage? Yikes.

I remember shipping off loads of paperbacks from our highschool English dept. back during the early Iraq War. One of our teachers was on active duty, and we got a request from his outfit for some books, especially classics. We had a ton of books that we no longer taught just taking up space, so we were happy to pack up several boxes and ship them off.

      That seems like...forever ago.

This meme just showed up on a Dear Commenter's blog today, so I'm happy to provide Inspiration (for the Desperate? Tired? Just Uninspired?).

      Glad to see you here.

  8. 1. What song/kind of music always makes you feel good/irritated?
I like the Melody Gardot channel on Pandora, or maybe Lucinda Willams, or Patricia Barber - depends on my mood. I've never been a fan of screaming guitar - I like music I can sing to.

    2. What are among your best/worst traits?
Best: an ability to see both sides of an issue (this makes it hard to maintain righteous indignation for long, although I do try).
    Worst: laziness and procrastination.

    3. What food did you used to like but now you don't?
I can't think of food I no longer like, although my sweet tooth isn't as raging as it used to be. But there are foods that no longer like me (I'm looking at you marshmallow fluff & BBQ).

    4. What book did everyone else love but you didn't?
The Goldfinch. I just wanted to shoot the main character for about 80% of the book. And it was about 500 pages too long.

    5. Fill in the blanks:
I love a freshly made bed, but I hate making it.
I love my husband, but I hate his depression.
I love snow, but I hate snow.

    1. Bug--1. I'm conflicted about Music I Can Sing To. Sometimes, I don't want to concentrate on lyrics or be aware of them. I just want Background (and I dislike whining violins).
      3. Marshmallow fluff, Nutella, peppers--I have lost my desire or tolerance of them. The first two are too sweet or too awful, ingredients-wise. Peppers = belching.
      4. I was on another blog (forget which one) and the Comments were raving about this book. I'm off fiction (have been for ages) so I'm not even curious.
      5. I'm not going to discuss snow with you.

  9. 1. Oh, 80's music to be sure. Not the pop stuff, the alternative stuff. Also, some 60's and 70's as well.

    2. My best traits are empathy, a great sense of humor, and I'm overall a positive person. My worst are a certain impulsiveness and a tendency toward criticism for the sake of criticism.

    3. Pickles and ham. I used to love eating pickles as a young girl, and stopped liking them decades ago. I don't know why I ever liked ham to begin with.

    4. The Book Thief. I just couldn't get into it, but lordy I tried.

    6. I love clean laundry but HATE folding it and putting it away.

    1. Gina--1. That's one of the things that was so great about the 80s music, the alternative scene was huge, and its music was so accessible.
      3. I've also lost my love of pickles, and bacon is another smoked food that I'm way over.
      4. I've heard that about this book from lots of people; they either loved it or didn't get what was so great about it.

Glad to see you here! Hope things are lightening up out there and you are having more time to yourself.

  10. 1. What song/kind of music always makes you feel good/irritated?
Music from my teens and 20’s has always made me feel either good or inspired: S&G, Dylan, Beatles, Joan Manuel Serrat (Spanish equivalent of S&G). And many more. Rap has always irritated me, but that is partially due to having to listen to it full volume from people stopped at the same traffic light as me.

    2. What are among your best/worst traits?
A few of my best traits are my ability to organize (like you), and my empathy for people in trouble.
My worst traits are being too impulsive at times and having a short temper.

    3. What food did you used to like but now you don't?
I almost have to reverse that question: I used to hate peanut butter, but I don’t anymore. My experience has been more in acquiring tastes for foods I never tasted as a child but did not actually hate because… I had never tasted them: mushrooms, avocados…. (not known in my household as a child; a mushroom, for me, was a strange grey cube in Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup--- not kidding! I did not eat an avocado for the first time until I was in my 20’s--- And I adore them now!)

    4. What book did everyone else love but you didn't?
All I can think of right now is very pedestrian stuff like ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull’ and similar books that were sort of cult favorites many decades ago, but which I did not particularly think were ‘epic.’ --— I found them overly preachy. (This is largely due to living out of the country for so long, as well. I was not always au fait with books that were trending from 1976-1999.) In the last couple of decades, most of what I have read was for grad studies or else re-reads of my favorites. Shameful, I know.

    5. Fill in the blanks: I love my ______, but I hate (its/their/the)______.
I love my husband, but I hate that he doesn’t always pee inside the toilet.
I love my car, but I hate that it leaves me petrified when having to stop on a 45 degree angle with a standard transmission.
I love cooking, but hate that I have to wash up so much stuff afterwards.

    1. Ortizzle--I love it when you catch up!

I never had avocados when I was a kid either. There were lots of foods we didn't have simply because my father didn't like them.

LOL on the mushrooms in Campbell's soup.
