Monday Meme: Firsts

Someone or something always has to Be First. A few Firsts are memorable, pioneering, momentous, and life-changing. Others are mundane, routine, and incidental. Let's take a look at a few

Firsts In The Life Of Nance

1. First thing you'd do if you won a million dollars?
Call my financial planner and ask how much fun we can have with it.

2. First real grownup job?
Bank teller

3. First thing you do when you get bad news?
Wallow in fear and look for solutions as fast as I can.

4. First place you lived on your own?
My college dorm, then my apartment with my husband.

5. First thing you look for on a restaurant menu?
If it's a nice restaurant, seafood or duck. If it's a casual place, pasta.

6. First choice for dessert in restaurants?
Creme brulee

7. First choice in career?
I always wanted to be a teacher, but had a brief year and a half of veterinary medicine study before I went back to education.

8. First book to make a significant impact on you?
It's a tie between A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and To Kill a Mockingbird. I read them at about the same time and was deeply affected by both. But TKAM has had the most lasting effect on me.

9. First movie you went to without adult supervision?
The Sound of Music

10. First thing you do in the shower?
Think about how cold I am.

  1. I know I should have answers to your pop quiz but I'm to old to remember half of them. I do know if I won the lotto I'd built a couple of houses. I love the process and I don't usually order dessert in restaurants. I'm pretty sure the first movie I saw without my parents was a black and white western because we got dropped off at the theater every Saturday from an early age until well into my teens. Also didn't live on my own until college but since my folks paid my tuition I'm not sure I'd classify that as "on my own."

    1. Jean--I don't usually order dessert in restaurants, either, but when I do, I order creme brulee. Some restaurants have lovely flavours, like lavender or chocolate or blood orange, and that is an extra incentive.

  2. 1..Save money on Financial adviser..I would just call your FA and ask what he/she told you to do. Where shall we go first? Rio or Paris ?

    2. Winding wire bobbins for transistors..Fifty cents an hour..

3.I don't look for solutions;I'm too busy wallowing in fear.

4.With my brand new husband in 1950..South Philadelphia..Rent $50.00 month

    5. Any kind of chicken. If all the chickens in the World died I would starve to death.

    6. Cheese cake with Graham cracker crust..Yum! Dear Defender of the Language..Do I have to continue to capitalize Graham just because he invented some crackers? How about Mr. Ritz and Mr. Nabisco?

7.I had lots of jobs but no career until I went into Real Estate at age 50. Thank God I was successful at it and made enough money to make up for all those years of low paying jobs winding bobbins or decorating the candy store window.

    8. Gone With The Wind..I had never understood,or even thought about, the Civil War. It was most enlightening to me. Second..Like you, I was captivated by little Francie and her family in A Tree Grows In Brooklyn.

    9. Fantasia or The Wizard of Oz..I am not certain which I saw first.

    10. Sing ! The acoustics are terrific and I sound like Streisand in there..

    1. Nancy--You don't have to capitalize the G in graham. Here is a fascinating discussion as to why. Ritz, since it is a brand, gets capitalized, but just the name Ritz. And Nabisco (short for National Biscuit Company), since it is a proper name, must always be capitalized.

As you probably remember, I used to reread Gone with the Wind every June. I still love the book and movie and its huge cast of characters and rich descriptions.

  3. 1. Buy a new house, although over here it would be almost all gone. Ok, put a super hefty down payment on a new house.

    2. Recreation Supervisor- promoted from Recreation Leader.

    3. Panic.

    4. Off-campus apartment at Sonoma State University.

    5. Something I can't make at home easily. Depends on the restaurant.

    6. Again, something I cannot really make at home, a complicated tart or something like that.

    7. I wanted to be a lawyer for a very long time.

    8. Jonathan Livingston Seagull, of all things. First book I remember crying over as a younger person. I haven't read it in a very, very long time and I might feel totally different about it at this point in my life.

    9. GREASE!

    10. Wash my hair.

    1. Gina--With regard to ordering something in a restaurant, yes! something I don't/won't make at home for myself. Good seafood is expensive here in NEO, where we are in the Heartland, nowhere near an ocean. And for some reason, almost NO ONE has duck on the menu. AND I HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY TO CANADA TO GET LIVER AND ONIONS AT A RESTAURANT.

You know, I don't think I ever read Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I have no idea when it came out or what its message is. For some reason, its author's name stuck with me, which is odd. (Richard Bach) I'm off to do some Googling to see if perhaps my memory gets joggled. It must be very moving if you became emotional. Interesting to see, if you read it again, what your reaction would b now.

    1. Ortizzle--I'm chuckling at #5--Prices. I guess I sort of look at that, too, but since we so often go to the same Old Standbys (thanks to my Pickiness), I don't have to look at that anymore.

We're a great deal alike in many of these. I'd love to take that million and travel immediately, too, but being so cautious and a slave to Planning For Every Exigency, I have to wait and See What Darrin Says First.

(Did you get to pick that movie, or was it someone else's choice?)

  5. The movie was my aunt's choice. It was part of a huge cousin get-together: 4 in my family + my aunt's six sons. We got to travel by bus from Annapolis where we lived to their house in Virginia. Within an hour of having 10 kids in the house, all between the ages of 6 and 14, my aunt said we would all get to see a great movie. She then bundled us into her VW Combie bus and dumped us at the movie theatre. We loved it. I was 9 or 10 and it was the first epic-type film I had ever seen. Also: Gregory Peck was in it. My first movie star heart-throb. When I later saw him in TKAM, I was smitten forever.

    1. Ortizzle--Oh, Atticus. Gregory Peck is forever Atticus to me, and I know he was never sorry to be associated with that role.

Recently, the ABC television show "The Good Doctor" (which I love) had an episode wherein the lead character (an autistic surgeon played by Freddie Highmore) takes out a copy of TKAM and asks if he may read an excerpt aloud. I immediately started crying. His dying young patient acquiesces, and I knew exactly which excerpt it would be; I began reciting it from memory as The Good Doctor read aloud. By the end of the passage, I was a mess, and even more in love with the writing on this show.

    2. Well, heck. Now I have to see if I can watch old episodes of this on my cable "on demand" channel. I hate cable, but we have to pay for it as part of our HOA dues, so I might as well take advantage. If I can't get previous episodes that way, I will check out HULU or similar; we now have a new smart TV with access to a ton of stuff (extra cost, of course, but directly available on screen once you pay.) Amongst other things, I am dying to know what the excerpt was from TKAM, lol, but also watching the series itself.)

    3. Ortizzle--You can watch it online at ABC.com if you want to avoid all that other stuff. I hate how dumb our SmartTV makes me feel. The remote looks deceptively simple; it's actually Satanically complex.

  6. O.K.,Nance. I will abide by your capitalization ruling on graham and Ritz and Nabisco. How about Little Debbie?

  7. 1. First thing you'd do if you won a million dollars?
Find a financial adviser to invest it, and then see about buying a house (although since we don’t ever want to move again I might see if our landlords would sell us this one).

    2. First real grownup job?
Secretary/bookkeeper at the Baptist Mission in Lusaka Zambia

    3. First thing you do when you get bad news?
I just found out today that my job is being eliminated. So, let’s see, what did I do? I cried for about 2 minutes, then told everyone I could think of, then I started working on my resume (but then I got overwhelmed & worked on a blog post instead).

    4. First place you lived on your own?
My college dorm, then a house in Zambia.

    5. First thing you look for on a restaurant menu?
First I look to see if their salads look interesting, then I try to decide if I even want a salad (I usually don’t).

    6. First choice for dessert in restaurants?
    Chocolate

    7. First choice in career?
I wanted to be a librarian, but a class in library science in the 9th grade changed my mind (either my teacher wasn’t very good, or I wasn’t very good - probably a combination of the two).

    8. First book to make a significant impact on you?
Ivanhoe. I was so outraged on Rebecca’s part!

    9. First movie you went to without adult supervision?
No idea. I usually went to movies with my mother - she even took me to see Urban Cowboy. Ha!

    10. First thing you do in the shower?
Adjust the water temperature & then wash my face.
